Using Gaussian 03 & GaussView on Different Computers

GaussView 3.0 can create input files and visualize results for any version of Gaussian 03. This is all automated when G03 and GV are located on the same computer.

When G03 is on a different computer than GaussView, the G03 Utilities must be installed along with GV. Be aware that in this case, GaussView cannot directly submit Gaussian jobs on remote machines. However, the G03 input file GV produces can be manually copied to a computer where Gaussian 03 is installed and be run there.

Similarly, if you want to visualize and analyze results from a Gaussian job when GV is on a different machine, you must:

  • Run the Gaussian utility formchk (pronounced: "form check") on the G03 checkpoint file on the computer where Gaussian is installed.

  • Move the resulting formatted checkpoint file and log file manually to the computer running GaussView.

The file can then be opened and processed by GaussView.

When both G03 and GV are on UNIX computers, you might be able to automate some of these steps by modifying the GV scripts (depending on your specific system configuration). However, we do not provide technical support for doing so.
